Jeremy Akerman

Jeremy Hutchison

Jeremy’s work is all in the ideas.  He contacted factories in countries like China, India or Indonesia and asked them to make a unique version of their mass produced products.  The worker was asked to customise the item in such a way as to make it unusable.  The correspondence that ensued out of the confusion was funny and poignant.  There are people in the world that work very hard for a living, but are never asked to use their imaginations, or think as individuals.  Once they got their heads around Jeremy Hutchinson’s bizarre request the resulting objects show ingenuity and a great deal of pleasure in being given an opening to view their world a little differently.

Slade MA Show: too much video. I’m never making a video as part of an exhibition.

Slade MA Show: more video. I’m never making a video as part of an exhibition.
The painting was dull. All the artists were foreign which suggests they may not have had to pass such a rigorous admissions proceedure.

The things that grabbed me where ideas. Ideas realised in a way that made me smile.

The lesson to learn from this is there is still a gap in painting to do some interesting work. Make your ideas good and keep a sense of humour.

Artists of note:
Jung Ju Seo who made a space that was welcoming and mysterious out of packaging tape.
